Bulwer Whale Watching Tour

Cape Moreton

The cruise in search of whales went ahead on the weekend of 4-5 September 2021. Four vessels participated, Nicky C, Shekinah, Bolt out of the Blue and The Cat's Whiskers. Numbers were down a bit due to a clash with father's day and skippers wishing to spend the day with their families on land rather than sea. Nevertheless these intrepid vessels headed out to the top of the bay. A fresh North-Easterly breeze meant more reliance on diesel than wind. We rendezvoused near Bulwer. Conditions crossing the Inner Freeman Channel were quite rough with a 2m swell, but it was less severe on the ocean side of the shallows. Conditions at Yellow Patch were not favourable for an anchor or raft-up so we spent a couple of hours competing with the two commercial whale-watch vessels to see who would be the first to spot a whale in the waters between Cape Moreton and Flinders Reef. Disappointingly, there wasn't very much whale activity with just a single blow sighted and no breaching or tail activity. Back around the corner to our planned anchorage at Bulwer wrecks. There was a wedding going on at the beach so sundowners was held aboard The Cats Whiskers. A couple of vessels had to decamp back to Manly earlier than expected so did not spend the night.
