1994 Annual Trophy Presentation Dinner

by Kerry Van Der Mark

Despite numbers being down this year, probably because of the long weekend. Trophy Presentation Night held at the Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club was as enjoyable as it has been in past years.

Bill and I joined Don and Janice McWatters and Jim and Barbara Stubbings in the bar for a pre-dinner drink and just before heading down stairs Pat and Judy Gannon arrived.

Downstairs in the function room Jill Mitchell, our Trophy Officer, told me she had been held up in traffic and was worried she'd be late to set up the trophy display in time. Ably assisted by Chris Black set up the trophies and they were soon in place. As usual, Jill's taste in trophy purchases was impeccable. I wouldn't have minded taking home a few myself, especially the beautiful vase won by Debbie Blake.

Geoff and Leslie Toomey, Judy Gannon, Ray and Chris Black, Clive and Heather Richards and Commodore Bill posed for a photo in front of the trophies.

The hors d'oeuvres were bought out shortly after everyone arrived. There wasn't much room left for the main meal: they were delicious. The hot and cold buffet was laid out and we proceeded to enjoy dinner after which our MC, Allan
Mitchell called on Bill to say a few words and then present trophies. Ray Black couldn't believe how heavy the Coolaroo Trophy was. A list of race results follows, so I won't go into details about who won what other than to say that regular race attenders soon collected sets of very attractively enscribed glasses. A glass was presented for fastest, first, second & third in each race. Very practical trophies indeed and fitting momentos of each race. I'll point out also that
Fred Gans, QMYC '93-'94 Club Champion, may have missed his calling in life. Among his vast haul of trophies, he received a pair of director's chairs from Kate and Trevor Dellit which he had to try out. As he took the mike from Allan and settled into his chair he looked more like a movie director than a sailor.

Later on in the evening sweets and coffee were served. I believe the Pavlova was very popular.

Kim Mitchell did his Mad Dog impression when he collected his trophy or I think that was why he was on all fours. The photograph has been censored.

Debbie Blake was presented with the Lady Skippers Chastity Trophy. Debbie thought the vase she won was too beautiful to get dirty so she asked the girls at the bar to put the flowers that went with it in a plastic bucket of water. Lets hope David has given her lots of bunches of roses since to keep her vase in use. Debbie pointed out that the Chastity Belt would be too uncomfortable to wear because of the little pins holding the shields to the belt. I can think of other reasons too. She did pose with the Belt supported by David  Beverley and Fred Gans

The final trophy for the night was for Club Person of the Year, presented to Janice McWatters by John Nolan. Thanks to Janice the Club has a well stocked and well run library of books and magazines and well cared for multihull archives. Congratulations Janice.

The raffle this year was not the usual bottle of alcohol. Sharon McLellan was the lucky winner of a trendy wet weather jacket. I hope you won't need to w'ear it too often when sailing. Sharon.

The evening had come to an end and as prize winners loaded cars with booty we were startled by a load tearing noise. I won't mention names but next time you win too many trophies to lift off the ground, Geoff, get someone to help you. It will save money on tailor's repair bills.

Thanks to the staff at MBTBC for making the night so enjoyable. Thanks to Allan our MC. Chris our Social Chairperson. Jill our Trophy Officer and whoever else lent a hand on the night
