Minutes of the General Meeting for MYCQ  2nd October 2014

Meeting opened: 20.00

Apologies: Richard Jenkins, Mike Hodges, Chris Dewar, John Hamaty, Chris Wren & Phil Wrench.

Visitors: Guest Speaker -Peter Nicholson International Paints. Peter’s apprenticeship was with Geoff Montague at Monty’s marina about 30 years ago. International Paints has been a sponsor for the Brisbane to Gladstone Race for many years.

Minutes:  Sue Perry read the previous minutes & moved they be accepted. Seconded by Wolfgang Viet.

Treasurer’s Report: by Leon Degenaars

The treasurer reported the following figures:

Suncorp Current Account: $8380.29;Perpetual Investment Account: Approx $31,000; Suncorp Savings Account: $211,192.66

Comments: The books of account have been prepared for the accountant prior to next months AGM.

YA has a new website promoting hosting for clubs. By email John Hamaty advised there were some restrictions, namely only members who pay capitation fees to YA could access.  Not feasible for MYCQ.

Leon Degenaars moved the accounts be accepted and was seconded by Alan Bolt.

Sailing Reports:

Big Boat report: by Jim Fern

* Bribie Cup & Koolaroo Trophy were held in September. Starters were Renaissance, Boss Racing and Hasta la Vista for the Saturday. It was a fresh South Easterly to start. All three boats hit the start at speed. Boss took off. It was a tight reach into Fisheries. We were doing 22 knots. The kites were up to the finish. Boss won on line honors, Hasta won on OMR & performance handicap. For the return trip on Sunday only Hasta & Renaissance had to bash into the South Easterly. The windward float on Hasta was 15‘ out of the water at times. We were as wet as shags but Renaissance remained dry and won on OMR & performance handicap.

* This weekend is the St Helena Cup. Apparently 24 multis have entered.

* Mike Hodges sent through a notice of an RQYS charity day on 10th October. Owners to bring their boats crewed and take guests out, similar to WAGS. There is expected to be a number of staff from various companies looking for rides who will be donating. So far Renaissance, Attitude and McMoggy have registered.

Trailer Boats report:  by Ted Kerr

QCYC spring series started last Saturday. Again Boss Racing disappeared. It was a 29 nautical mile course and very enjoyable especially as there was little tacking. The Spring series is ‘interclub’ as is the Summer series after Xmas.‘ The’ Bribie Cup was held on Bribie Island. The Bolts won Race One of the spring series by ‘hanging in there’ against the bigger boats.

Cruising Report: by Ray Perry

The MYCQ Bribie Cup to Scarborough attracted one cruising vessel, Purr-fik, which also acted as the Start vessel for the racers. As we could set our own course, unlike the racers, the following conditions made for a very pleasant sail. At the yacht club that evening we joined the racers plus, locals Peter & Delwyn Hackett added to the fun. On Sunday Purr-fik left early to avoid the forecast 20+ knot South Easterlybut with nothing over 17 knots it was a great sail home.

Future Cruises:The Mooloolabah Cruise (and race) is on 18/19thth October. The Cruisers are considering leaving on Friday 17th and heading over to Moreton. In November the Navigators Nightmare & raftup is on. After Xmas the cruise to Richmond River and Ballina will leave from the Gold Coast Seaway on 27th December if the conditions are favourable.

Other News:  

Wolfgang & Birgit Viet recently joined the Mystery Island Regatta in Fiji on a 45’ mono. Mostly fun, some sailing. A lot of unchartered waters. Temps 26-33. Wind 10-35knots. Very enjoyable.

General Business:

• Club has purchased a PA & Audio Visual system.
• Annual General meeting next month. A short general meeting followed by AGM. No guest speaker.
• No general meeting in Dec or Jan
• Management committee has passed a motion to $500 donate to Leukemia foundation as part of the Phil McQueen memorial. Phil made an invaluable contribution of filming the Brisbane to Gladstone races over the last ten years.
• Bruce reported the QCYC Blessing of the Fleet was a lovely day & very well hosted. A choral group sung at morning tea, the sea cadets raised the flag, a small fleet sailed past to take the salute and a delicious lunch followed.

Guest speaker- Peter Nicholson from International Paints.

All boat owners were ‘glued’ to their seats hoping to glean more insight into this crucial part of boat maintenance.

Peter’s extensive knowledge of the marine building industry and in particular the latest developments in the various anti-fouls were insightful and practical. He gave many examples of what would be the appropriate products and methods for various types of boats and conditions. Peter fielded a number of questions from the members which was very helpful and much appreciated. Peter said he was happy to be contacted to discuss any issues  - ‘foul’ or otherwise!
