1966 Night Race
Source: 1967 Multihull Annual
The Night Race was held on November 26th starting at 4pm and took the following course: Sandgate to M3 (near Tangalooma), to Rouse Light (Opp. South Passage), to Coffee Pots at shipping lane, to Inner Dolphins at Bishop Island.
STARTERS: Marina, Turrama, Coolaroo, Naiad, Kundo-Wanga, Naxos.
In a 25 knot north easterly, Naiad rounded the first buoy, followed by Coolaroo and Kundo-Wanga. Marina later took the lead from Naiad with Coolaroo aJld Kundo-Wanga still in pursuit. As the breeze changed slightly to the north Marina still held the lead as M3 was sighted. Marina, however, continued on the port tack, mistaking another red light for M3, discovered his error too late, and retired from the race . A great disappointment after such a sterling performance. A terrific spinnaker run from M3 to Rouse Light gave Coolaroo the advantage and she crossed the line at 10:50pm to take the trophy on corrected time.
Elapsed Times: Coolaroo 6 hours 50 mins. Naiad 7 hours 37mins. Tunama 8 hours 41 mins.
